The Ship Tavern Holborn
‘Tis the season to be jolly and the perfect time to enjoy a cosy dinner or drink with loved ones and friends. The last few weekends have been exactly that and every now and then it is great to find a little bolthole in the most unassuming of places. One that you almost want to keep a secret! However, that would be entirely unfair and as this is the time for sharing and giving, today I recommend The Ship Tavern!
The Ship Tavern is one of those traditional Englishman’s pubs which are quite rare to find! Everything is just great from its décor of cosy red velvety-looking seating, to the open fire, to its outstanding food served upstairs in its restaurant, the Oak Room. This family-ran pub is hidden away in a little alley way called Gate Street located just behind Holborn station. Boasting to be one of London’s oldest pubs, the place is now in the hands of Ross Evans whose family has been in the pub scene for four generations. They restored The Ship Tavern to that old school dining charm. If you are a bit of a drinks connoisseur then all these will have you watering at the mouth: The Ship Tavern’s six ‘Cask Marque’ accredited real ales, selection of over 50 gins from the gin cabinet, and a comprehensive wine list.
So having eaten hardly anything all day, I and my partner in crime Hannah thought it was time we sampled some of London’s pub scenes finest food! Here is a taste of what we indulged in!
Brandy Flashed Mushrooms on Cornbread, herb oil.
Beef Wellington truffle mash, curly kale, red wine jus .
Trio of Lamb braised lamb shoulder, lamb fillet, crisp belly, mashed potato, garden pea & mint purée, roasted vine tomatoes, mint oil.
British Cheeses grape & apple chutney, banana & walnut bread, biscuits
(best bit: you get to choose your own cheese from a selection!)
Peanut Butter & Jelly cheescake with Oreo cookie base
Mrs J’s verdict – The Oak Room is everything you would want on a winter evening. From a crackling open fire, to cosy dining booths and a charming characteristic decor to match! The food isn’t bad either! Decor aside, the food is simply amazing! With generous size portions at a very reasonable price, this wasn’t really what I was expected to be nuzzled down an alley way in Holborn. Sometimes when you get high quality food, you wonder where the downfall is… the service? In this case neither! Both were on top form. The staff members were polite, attentive without being intrusive and made the whole meal a pleasurable experience, one that I’m hoping to do again very soon!
