Pack your straw bag and grab those shades! Summer, I’m still chasing you
Summer may be slowly slipping away into Autumn, but for those of you lucky enough to slip away outside of the school holidays, now is the perfect time to seek out that winter sun. Passport and bank cards aside, the next most important item on your list must be THE bag of the summer, the straw bag. Why have I taken so long – almost the end of summer – to write about this trend? Well, I’m not really much of a trend follower. I buy what I like and what realistically suits me and my shape/style and, historically, I’ve always hated straw bags! That was until my friend came around wearing her Wood/Grey bag that something came over me. I was like a magpie in desperate need to grab that shiny item. The minute she left, I was on the Wood/Grey website wondering whether I should get just the one!
Handmade from a small village in Bali, this round woven bag is not only beautiful to look at but also practical to use. Each bag takes several weeks to complete and whilst lightweight, it is made to last via a process that involves smoking over coconut husks in a traditional oven to add strength. Which is why on opening the bag, you get a smoky smell that soon disappears when aired. The bag also comes with a traditional batik lining (a clever addition for keeping everything inside when opening and closing the bag) and a leather strap and snap closure. Due to the nature of the straw colour, this bag easily compliments any outfit and works well as a day and night bag. At £83, this is not the cheapest straw bag out there but its quality and design speak volumes along with the compliments (from both men and women) that I get every time I wear it. That’s when you know you made a good straw purchase!
