Going on a holiday is the perfect time to lose yourself in a good book. So that was just what I and my best friend did (in between glasses of Prosecco and daily naps). Whilst I managed to finish The Girl with All the Gifts, my best friend only managed to get to chapter four – so Jess, hurry up! However in her defense, I did arrive armed with every magazine I could physically carry on the plane so we did have a lot of materials to get through. Here is what we thought on our chosen books:
The Girl with All the Gifts, a thriller, is the first book that I have read by M.R.Carey. Now I’m not really a thriller type of girl. Something like The Hunger Games I can handle but The Girl… was all new to me. I would even go as far as saying it was a bit Sci Fi. The story is based around a girl called Melanie who is no normal girl. Every morning, she waits in her cell to be collected for class by an armed guard. At night she sleeps along in a locked cell. She gets showered down with disinfectant and fed once a week as that is her normal. Have I got you gripped yet? Not wanting to spoil the plot as any slight description will give it away but Melanie lives in a world that is normal to her. During weekdays, she, along with the other children, goes to school and learns about the world as it was once known. The story is mainly told though Melanie’s eyes. She becomes more observant and when children go missing, Melanie starts to question everything around her and who she really is. To buy The Girl with All the Gifts click here.
Now I have never watched Girls and neither has my friend so we have no expectations about this book apart from the fact that it is meant to honest and funny. If like me, you need a bit of a background, then what I can tell you is that Lena Dunham is the writer, actor and director of the HBO award winning series of Girls. Her book is an autobiography or essays in lessons that she has learnt in her life. Covering all topics of her life, family, friends, schooling etc, it will have you laughing out loud and wanting to read more. If you’re a fan of Girls then you’re one step ahead of me and are already sold. But until then you’ll just have to go with the above and wait for my full review.
