Baby Shower Options
So this Sunday saw the traditional activity of women gathering together to share their words of wisdom with the new mother to be! Mr J was quick to mock this union of women stating that it is clearly invented by the Americans to feed a consumerist society. What he didn’t realise is that whilst the term ‘Baby Shower’ is a 21st century invention, the idea of showering the mother to be is very much part of different cultures and the modern day alternative to religious activities such as baptisms. For example, in Brazil a baby shower is known as a ‘Cha de Bebe’ (a baby tea), and in south Africa a ‘Stork party’.
I have been to a number of different Baby Showers in recent years and have found they come in many different guises. Here is a good overview:
A) The mini wedding – invites, a gift list (preferably at John Lewis or gift vouchers from Jojo Mama Bebe). A Full on itinerary of activities and games with a strict seating plan. Each guest also gets to win prizes, sample baby food and leave with a goody bag! (I love a good goodie bag)
B) The toned down mini wedding – e-invites, a few games (typically guess the size of the bump, sweepstakes on the sex of the baby, and maybe the odd nappy changing exercise). Gifts and goodie bags optional.
C) The relaxed lunch amongst friends either at a restaurant/pub/house/garden/park (family invites are subject to personal choice). Prosecco, prosecco and more prosecco (just the one for the mum to be ;)) and loads of gossip/ free advice.
My Sunday outing was definitely option C with a lot of discussion on Hypno Birthing!
Option c aside, there is one thing that I will always bring, asked or not, and that is a gift for the new arrival. So if you’re not planning on making something creative like a handmade/ hand designed baby grow then then here’s a few of my (non tried and tested) gift options:
